How can I check the number of visitors received a day?

Question by Bluetruth: How can I check the number of visitors received a day?
I remember finding a website that told me this information, but I can’t remember where I found it. The website was even able to identify visitors from different countries based on their IP, the percentage of worldwide visitors for a site (ie: CNET received like 3% last time I checked), and a few graphs.

What would be a price range for having a website designed that visitors could would need to interact with?

Question by Thomas M: What would be a price range for having a website designed that visitors could would need to interact with?
Also, is it necessary to hire a web designer for this?

The website would have a data base of real estate listings. There would be a fair amount of graphics and I would like to use Flash if possible because it looks really good. I realize that my question is a little clueless; I’m not a techie. I appreciate your patience and advice!

You can count on that kind of site costing a quite a bit of money to do the right way. When it comes to things like this, you can have two out of these three: Done cheap, Completed quickly, High quality.

A high quality site that is done quickly will cost an arm and a leg. A cheap high quality one may be in development for the next two years, and a cheap, quick one will fall apart and make your visitors go to your competitor.

Hiring a designer is a necessity. As well as hiring a developer. The two are very different, but you can usually find a firm that employs both.

Think of it as building a house…web designer –> interior designer. web developer –> architect

Neither could do the other’s job, and you wouldn’t want them to try.

On average though, a comprehensive database-interactive site can cost between 8k and 10k USD. That is really the low end, though. It can be very expensive to get a site going.

Oh and I’d recommend avoiding flash, it is an accessibility nightmare…meaning that if your visitors don’t have it, they don’t see your content. Look to the big-time sites and see how much Flash they use…sites like Google and Yahoo. YouTube gets away with it solely because there is no alternative…the rest though…anyone who can avoid it will.

How do I protect my website from visitors or other companies?

Question by Robert2309930201091209: How do I protect my website from visitors or other companies?
I feel I have a very unique idea for a website. How does one go about protecting the overall theme of the website? Example: What would stop someone else from making a site like eBay that does bidding and selling with nearly the same format? Can you protect an idea like this when used on the internet?

It sounds like you want to copyright your website. This is the link to the US Copyright Office. If you look under the FAQ section, it has information about protecting websites. It also talks about protecting ideas (you can’t.)

Hope this gives you a starting point.

Best answer:

Answer by David D
1. Check they don’t have one already
2. Generate a pseudo-random tracking id (and store it)
3. Send it in the HTTP response in a Set-Cookie header.
