Basically, I recorded myself preaching and i have a website that I want to put these recorded sermons on. I want people to hear them on my website. For example, the visitors select the best one they want to hear. My sermons are im MP3 format already.

My router is blinking which means that a program on it is connecting to the internet, but that happens even when I’m not using my browser. I would like to know what programs are connecting to the internet and what they are doing. I assume its just software updates, but i want to be sure. Is there some program which I can download to keep track of this?

If you are using windows you can check this from the command line.

1. Open a command prompt (Windows key + R), type cmd then press ‘OK’
2. Type netstat -ab

You will see a list of all the open network connections and the name of the process they are associated with. You can google the process names to find out what they are associated with.

Keep in mind the activity light on your router may be flashing due to external internet traffic. Viruses , hackers, etc are always scanning for open targets to connect to.

Google analytics is very powerful. If your not going to be tracking conversions and click through rates I might not recommend it. But if you want to keep track of what your customers buying or how many people are actually clicking your ads it can be very useful.

I mean what are the specs that come into play? RAM? Internet speed? Hard disk space?
I have 4GB RAM with about 500 GBs of memory and DSL
Also, will search engines detect my website if I’m hosting it? (I read somewhere that free hosting can cause your website to not be detected)

I wouldnt recommed using a laptop as a server, though now adays laptops can be desktop replacements they are still not really up to being switched on for 24/7 360 days, if you want to host the site yourself i would recomend buying a second hand tower server off ebay, their relitively cheap especially without a windows os. You should also consider using a cheap hosting company to host your website like daily.co.uk.

As for spec is would depend on what your site was about and how much traffic, the speck you have above should be powerful enough.

if you do decide to host it your self you will need to pay a small amout to have your site on the web for the nameservers to know about it most companys offer this for free when you buy a domain with them. you will need to have a fixed IP or use DynDNS (free service) to route the traffic to your site.

Once your site is on line the search engine spiders and other toys will detect it usually after 48 hours in my experience

Where can I find those stats?
All I find in GA is the number of visitors – that’s it.

The main analytics page will only show you visits. You have to click view reports for the good details.

In your google analytics account, just go to traffic sources on the left hand side. It will show you where they come from, what browser they used, what search terms they used to find you.
