How to monitor bandwidth on my home network?

Question by eric: How to monitor bandwidth on my home network?
Hi, I have a home network with 2 PCs and a PS3 on it and I want to be able to monitor the amount of bandwidth each device is taking. I know that when either of them are on it slows down the internet a lot but that is to be expected because Atlantic Broad Band sucks. My PC is the main PC for the network and it is running Linux so any software needs to be a Linux program. I want to know how I can do this? Can anyone help?

You should look into a networking concept called Quality of Service. You can set priorities for which device gets its traffic handled first and how much bandwidth it gets. For example, you can tell it to put your main PC first in line, your other second and your PS3 last so your PS3 won’t disrupt other activities. It’s usually a part of the web interface on the router and you should go find the manual for your router to learn how to implement it.

How to get the most bandwidth on a shared internet network on the ps3?

Question by J.: How to get the most bandwidth on a shared internet network on the ps3?
So I’m living with 4 roommates and we all share 1 connection/network wirelessly through a router. My roommates spend a lot of their time watching streaming videos and netflix that slow down my internet connection when I am playing on my playstation 3 online that it becomes almost unplayable due to the lag.

I asked the landlord if we could upgrade for faster internet connections, but he says we already have a high internet connection. Is there any way I can get the most bandwidth, or to be able to play lag free sharing the internet connection? Possibly mess with the internet through my laptop so I get the better connection? I am farthest from the router and am unable to move it since it’s next to my landlord’s room and he wants it there.

Certain types of network traffic have different priorities and for your misfortune, multimedia traffic has a higher priority than mere data. Your roommates who are watching Netflix have a higher priority than yours.

If you have access to the Router in question, and if it’s a highly customizable, you can configure a custom priority and bandwidth rules so your PS3′s IP Address will have the highest priority.

Q&A: How can I block administrator access on a college network?

Question by Pontiac007: How can I block administrator access on a college network?
I am going to be going to college and I got a letter from the IT administrator that says I have to have certain programs installed before full internet access is given to me. However, my question is: how do they know if I have the software?

I shouldn’t have any administrative shares if I’m running Windows XP Home, should I? I thought that could be a backdoor but if WinXP Home doesn’t have administrative shares, that can’t be it.

I don’t have any folders shared, I disabled (and put a 10 character password on) the guest account, have a password on my administrator account, and have a software firewall installed. Do I need to do anything else to keep my computer “invisible” from the administrators and/or students?
It’s my computer and they want me to install Symantec antivirus (so, presumably Norton).

is it your computer or the schools? they won’t ry to access your PC if its yours, if its theirs they have ways and its ok to do so.

The software they are talking about could broadcast traffic to let them know its installed. What kind of software is it?

How can I protect my computer in a network?

Question by mathwhiz454: How can I protect my computer in a network?
There’s a family network here at my house, and my dad is a weirdo who has a history of looking through my, my siblings, and my mother’s business online.

Since we’re all connected to the same network, I want to make sure he can’t get into my computer from his. I know there’s a way that can be done.

Can someone help me protect my computer from being accessed anywhere else than right here at my computer itself?

Whats a good way to force heavy network traffic for software testing?

Question by flapanthers2000: Whats a good way to force heavy network traffic for software testing?
Hello,

I have a piece of software that I think is affected by heavy network use, but I need to prove this easily. My idea is to force heavy bandwidth consumption, then see the software response, turn off the network choking, see software repsonse, and so forth. Basically, turn a “slow” switch on and off by choking network.

My ideas the best I can think so far is to just download a TON of stuff. Are there utilities that can simulate slowing bandwidth for me instead?

Thanks!!!!!!!

You can create traffic load with this:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/traffic

It’s open source, so it’s free to use.

Another load generator is here:

http://www.nsauditor.com/network_tools/network_traffic_generator.html

It has a trial period before it becomes necessary to buy the software.
