A normal view counter will simply show how many times a page has been accessed (regardless of who is accessing it).

A smart or unique view counter only counts unique visitors. If the visitor refreshes the page for example, the view account does not go up. There are no universal rules for how unique visits are decided, but typically it is one of two ways. Either the counter keeps track of each visitor by IP address so that there is only 1 view per IP address, or the counter stores a cookie in the user’s browser and does not count the user again if the cookie is still there. Sometimes an expiry date will be set so that previous visitors are counted again after a certain time period.
