Does anyone know good research material on Internet trends and what people look for when they search?

Question by HILF: Does anyone know good research material on Internet trends and what people look for when they search?
I am putting together a proposal of web trends and what direction my company needs to go with our web properties. I am willing to do the homework, but if someone can point me in the right direction on websites or magazines i can look at. I would really appeciate it. Thank you in advance for the help.

Maybe some search engine statistics would be helpful? http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=reports

And here’s an article on online search habits: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2006/aug/31/searchengines.wikipedia .

You may also want to try looking through these sites:
- http://scholar.google.com/

Quote: “Another good way with Google is to search for what you want along with filetype:pdf or filetype:ppt. Also try adding site:edu or site:org.”

why dont japan sell its internet access?

Question by Dfh: why dont japan sell its internet access?
its fast and cheap,
if theyd sell it to someone in france by installing very long fibre cables, they could make profit
the latency would be higher, but some people dont care about latency.

Answer by Andrew S
The reason Japan has fast Internet access is that they have invested in links to a greater extent than some other nations. Putting a link to Japan from France would not be the best way of doing things – the bulk of non-European traffic will be heading to the US. Why congest a long and expensive link from France to Japan and then another long and expensive link from Japan to the US when the same traffic could equally well be sent via a much shorter and cheaper transatlantic link to the US? All Internet access is not equivalent – it has both a start and an end. Random faster links elsewhere that do not coincide with either of those or the route between them do not help you.

How can I tell what programs on my computer are currently downloading information from the internet?

Question by Zachary: How can I tell what programs on my computer are currently downloading information from the internet?
My router is blinking which means that a program on it is connecting to the internet, but that happens even when I’m not using my browser. I would like to know what programs are connecting to the internet and what they are doing. I assume its just software updates, but i want to be sure. Is there some program which I can download to keep track of this?

If you are using windows you can check this from the command line.

1. Open a command prompt (Windows key + R), type cmd then press ‘OK’
2. Type netstat -ab

You will see a list of all the open network connections and the name of the process they are associated with. You can google the process names to find out what they are associated with.

Keep in mind the activity light on your router may be flashing due to external internet traffic. Viruses , hackers, etc are always scanning for open targets to connect to.

How to get the most bandwidth on a shared internet network on the ps3?

Question by J.: How to get the most bandwidth on a shared internet network on the ps3?
So I’m living with 4 roommates and we all share 1 connection/network wirelessly through a router. My roommates spend a lot of their time watching streaming videos and netflix that slow down my internet connection when I am playing on my playstation 3 online that it becomes almost unplayable due to the lag.

I asked the landlord if we could upgrade for faster internet connections, but he says we already have a high internet connection. Is there any way I can get the most bandwidth, or to be able to play lag free sharing the internet connection? Possibly mess with the internet through my laptop so I get the better connection? I am farthest from the router and am unable to move it since it’s next to my landlord’s room and he wants it there.

Certain types of network traffic have different priorities and for your misfortune, multimedia traffic has a higher priority than mere data. Your roommates who are watching Netflix have a higher priority than yours.

If you have access to the Router in question, and if it’s a highly customizable, you can configure a custom priority and bandwidth rules so your PS3′s IP Address will have the highest priority.

Is it legal for Universities to block internet traffics?

Question by cute emo boy: Is it legal for Universities to block internet traffics?
Our University has a no-torrenting policy, this is enforced by disallowing any P2P type UL/DL.

I believe the above is legal, BUT, can they censor websites by blocking traffic to them?

For example, can a University block traffic to game servers or websites such as 4chan.org or runescape?

Recently, our traffic to these two websites has gone down. I have checked down for everyone and both sites are up.

Any ideas?

What is the catch of any speed one price for internet?

Question by J.Lee: What is the catch of any speed one price for internet?
What is the catch of this phrase? I’ve seen it in different websites like AT&T. It’s obvious the person is gonna pick the highest speed.

Best answer:

Answer by JL
When the promotion ends, the price is higher for the faster speed. It probably costs them all the same to service any of the speeds and I think you have a harder time downgrading from the fastest to the slowest when the promo ends.

The RAM will really depend on what the server is doing and how many programs it has to run – how did you get a job as a sys admin if you can’t judge the RAM for yourself? o,o
